Client brief: The original garden was laid to lawn and tired patio with raised beds for growing vegetables. The aspiration was to create a year round interest rear garden. A place to relax, entertain and enjoy with family and friends. A design which incorporates a pond, greenhouse, storage and naturalistic, flowing planting providing interest across the seasons. A garden which is a feast for the senses through colour, fragrance, movement, sound and reflection.

Site: 18 x 10m rear garden (180sqm) approximately

Design concept & response: The design concept celebrates the ‘New Beginnings’ of the clients who have recently settled in this beautiful Chilterns village. The design draws upon the quiet heritage and character of the area blending the emotional narrative of starting afresh with ecological richness, textures and tones of the Chilterns landscape creating a garden that is deeply personal and distinctly local. A garden with a seasonal atmosphere which feels hopeful at every moment of the year. A strong seasonal rhythm creates a garden that is constantly renewing. Relaxation & dining terraces and coffee spots allow the garden to be enjoyed by family and friends alike.

The Inspiration

The inspiration for the design comes from the local Chiltern’s chalk streams and their natural flowing nature combined with the circle as a symbol of ‘New Beginning’s - every ending folds into a new beginning.
New Beginning's

The garden design concept focused on celebrating the clients’ arrival in their new home. A garden which blends the emotional narrative of starting afresh with the ecological richness of the local area. A garden which will evolve over time as the clients settle into village life.
Creative small garden design

Small garden design is often more challenging than a larger space. Meeting the client brief and also creating a glorious garden requires skill and experience. You instantly know when a garden ‘feels right’ and you have the correct balance of hard landscaping and planted softness creating a space you want to spend time within.

New beginning’s

The completed garden features two terraces; the first for seating and relaxation and the second for dining under a modern oak pergola. Block walkways connect the two terraces. A new combined greenhouse and shed saves space and provides the opportunity to rekindle the gardening hobby. Organic gravel pathways with soft, perennial planting spilling over.

Coffee anyone?

Circular block paved coffee terrace positioned to catch the early morning sun. The perfect place to enjoy the first coffee of the day surrounded by multistem trees, beech hedging and immersive planting

The sound of water

Bespoke circular pool with central copper fountain and cascade adds something special to the garden. The sound of water pouring into the pool creates a sense of calm throughout the garden.

Before

A tired looking garden with a large patio area in a shady area of the garden and lawn. Small shed and vegetable beds. Very prominent faded fencing. Limited planting. Trees over hanging the garden.

The Build by Landesigns

The garden was constructed by Landesigns a local, multi award winning landscape contractor. The garden design required substantial professional expertise to create the bespoke elements and execute the required build quality.

Planting the garden

The final element in any garden build is the planting. The plants are laid out in accordance with the planting plans, adjusted as required, and planted by experienced teams.
